Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Deforestation in Potiskum Local Government Area (LGA), Yobe State, has been a significant environmental concern for several years. The depletion of forests and the destruction of natural habitats have been exacerbated by both human activity and geopolitical factors, including local governance challenges, regional policies, and inter-community conflicts (Alhassan & Kachalla, 2023). Potiskum is situated in a region that has experienced varying degrees of political instability, which has hindered effective environmental management strategies and forest conservation efforts.
Geopolitical strategies employed by local and state governments aim to address deforestation through community-based forestry management, reforestation programs, and policy reforms. However, the implementation of these strategies has often been undermined by political divisions, lack of adequate funding, and conflicting interests among local communities. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of these geopolitical strategies and identify areas for improvement in tackling deforestation in Potiskum LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Deforestation in Potiskum LGA continues to pose a major environmental challenge, impacting biodiversity, local climate, and the livelihoods of communities reliant on forest resources. Despite several geopolitical strategies aimed at curbing deforestation, their implementation has been hampered by weak governance structures, insufficient resources, and local conflicts. This study will evaluate these strategies and recommend ways to strengthen efforts to address deforestation in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how geopolitical factors influence environmental conservation efforts, specifically regarding deforestation in Potiskum LGA. The findings will inform policymakers and environmental agencies on how to improve strategies for forest conservation and sustainable land management in the region.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Potiskum LGA in Yobe State and will assess the impact of geopolitical strategies on deforestation. Limitations may include challenges in accessing data on local deforestation rates and political dynamics in the region.
